Laurel McKay Mysteries
review 1: I don't usually read cozies, because I generally prefer my mysteries to be more hardboiled. But when I spotted this one on sale on one of the e-letters I get and saw that the heroine's first name is the same as mine--Laurel--I had to buy it. There's not many of us, so we Laurels have to stick together! Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It's a really good mystery--I usually figure out the solution before the end, but I missed it big time with this one. The identity of the culprit never occurred to me, but when it was revealed, it made sense. Besides being a good mystery, the book is very funny. Ms. Sample is a witty writer who knows how to make the reader chuckle and sometimes laugh out loud.I really enjoyed the descriptions of the Hawaiian scenery and life. I've never... more been there so I can't vouch for the accuracy of said descriptions, but they certainly sounded believable. BTW, this is the third in the series. I haven't read any of the others, but it wasn't necessary to enjoy this book. It stands on its own. I do intend to start at the beginning with the first book now that I've found a cozy mystery series that I like. All in all, a good read, even if it didn't have the graphic violence and hard language I usually prefer in my mysteries! :-) It's good to take a break and read a rated G book once in a while!
review 2: I must confess; I'm an unabashed mystery reader. I gobble them up like chocolates. But rarely do I find a protag I'd like to hang out with. I mean I love Kinsey Milhone to death but I just can't relate to someone with only one dress. Laurel McKay, Cindy Sample's amateur sleuth, is that rare exception. She could be my BFF. She's sexy but not in a "threatening" way, she likes her food and drink while lamenting her spreading hips, she's a lovably imperfect mom, and she's got almost an " I Love Lucy" knack for getting herself in hot water. Just my kind of gal.In this third outing (following Dying for a Date and Dying for a Dance), Laurel is in Hawaii for best friend Liz's wedding when a voluptuous hula dancer--who may be having an affair with Laurel's supposedly straight-arrow brother--ends up dead on the rocks below the brother's restaurant. With family members high on the suspect list, like a Mama Bear, Laurel's going to move heaven and earth to protect her kin. What follows is a hilarious--at times, perilous--romp, which pits Laurel not only against the local cops (and a killer) but against dangers well camouflaged by the Big Island's exotic beauty. With all the uncertainty and plain lousy news going on in the world, this is the perfect antidote--a fast fun read, peopled with characters you can pass time with, without feeling you need to loofah afterwards.Hats off, Cindy Sample, you made my day. less
