review 1: Introspective in the extreme, this book speaks to all of us. While the “woman upstairs” is a single middle age school teacher, her unfulfilled dreams, her contacts with those she loves and dreams love her in return, and her frustrations with life, are deeply meaningful. And her conclusion is exciting as well. I and others will need time to reflect, but this book could be a near miss or a classic. review 2: Actually 2 1/2. I recall liking 'The Emperor's Children,' but my Goodreads record doesn't show I read it, which doesn't bode too well for several reasons. 'The Woman Upstairs' was disappointing and boring at times. I didn't like the story, of a woman whose friendship with a family - the wife, the husband and the child - was not quite normal: she was ob... moresessed with each of them instead of leading her own life. less
