review 1: A not bad yarn of two brothers on a coke and meth fueled romp through the jewelry business of Texas in the 80s. I'm sure you can imagine some of it, but I was taken aback at the blatant dirty business dealing, and it made me wonder what exactly jewelers are up to. It's a trashy fun read, especially if you'd rather be blowing lines at work and getting thousands of dollars of commission money thrown at you every day before you're even old enough to drink. However, despite the ostensible success that main characters in the book experience, they are morally, intellectually, and spiritually bankrupt. And just like in real life, no amount of stimulants can make that type of person stimulating. Luckily the book ends not long after the high ends.
review 2: A deft
... morecrackling combination of Bret Easton Ellis meets JD Salinger, this coming of age story, set in the diamond/jewelry selling business of Texas, sucked me in and spit me out. While still full of the cliches of drugs, dirty business, and even a hooker with a heart of gold, the writing was fresh and insidery and fast paced. The protagonist is sympathetic enough to care about but distanced enough to shock you regularly. You'll want to know what happens to the many love triangles and the ponzi-style of selling that they can't possibly sustain, when combined makes for an enjoyable read. less

Really interesting, great writing, but it makes the reader think "I could do this."
