review 1: Actual rating: 4.75It was one of the very few books I've read that was about loss and family, and it was so touching and felt so realistic. The grief that Pearl feels throughout the book is so understandable and heartbreaking, you can't help but feel for her.The whole book was slowly paced, but not in a bad way. I actually enjoyed it as it didn't feel rushed. Another thing I liked was that the ''chapters'' in this book are months, so you can easily follow the events and the evolution of how she's feeling. I loved the ending (no spoilers, promise!), and I think it was perfect in a realistic kind of way. Might I also add that, thankfully, the ''love interest'' wasn't overbearing in thi story. I loved how it was really kept to the close people in your life, and that it wasn't... more preachy or went too happy-go-lucky either.
review 2: "I always thought you'd know, somehow, if something terrible was going to happen. I thought you'd sense it, like when the air goes damp and heavy before a storm and you know you'd better hide yourself away somewhere safe until it all blows over. But it turns out it's not like that at all. There's no scary music playing in the background like in films. No warning signs. Not even a lonely magpie."I was not expecting this book to have as much of an impact on me as it did. I found the subject matter a little hard to deal with as I have an incredibly close relationship with my mum so the thought of anything happening to her was kind of terrifying. Despite this, I enjoyed every heartbreaking moment of this book. I really felt for Pearl as she attempted to deal with the loss of her mother, I completely understood her heartbreak and loneliness and anger, and was so pleased when she overcame all that. A lovely, heartwarming read, definitely earning its name as the best YA of 2014. You will cry, you will laugh, you will love. Tell everyone you hold dear that you love them right now, because you never know. less
