review 1: This novel is about Jenny Cooper (Jane Austen’s cousin & bff). Her bravery despite her quiet shyness, how she met her true love Captain Thomas William, fell madly in love with him, the exquisite balls and events that she attended and at the end of the story he asks for her hand. According to the author’s note at the back of the novel, they will get married later in the same year they met. Yeah..happily ever after!
review 2: Cora Harrison does a nice job of portraying Jenny Cooper, the cousin and best friend of Jane Austen. Based in the late 1700's, we begin in a dreadful boardinghouse in Southampton England. Jane nearly perishes from a terrible flu if it wasn't for the courageous intervention of Jenny against the dastardly Mrs. Cawley. She is the headmistr
... moreess and horrible spinster who nearly starves and freezes the students to save a few pennies. In desperation, Jenny absconds into the night to mail a letter begging Jane's family to come rescue her from this desperate situation. She must sneak out past the dreadful eyes of Mrs. Cawley and her snitches late at night. The dark streets of Southampton are no place for a young girl and if it wasn't for the young dashing Captain Thomas Williams Jenny's reputation, perhaps her life and most definitely Jane's would have been nearly lost.Fortunately for both girls the Austen's arrive days later, just in time to save both girls from imminent disaster. Jenny is welcomed into Jane's home like a sister. She had been sent away to boarding school by her distant brother and snobbish wife Augusta, neither of whom truly cared for Jenny. Nursed back to healthy, Jenny finds the Austens loving, nurturing and kind. Will Jenny ever see the young Captain Thomas Williams again? And will he share how they met? Does Jenny's family ever try to claim her again or does she remain in the loving embrace of the Austen's. Continue to read in these wonderfully crafted chapters of Cora Harrisons book I Was Jane Austen's Best Friend. I particularly loved the intricate descriptions of the period clothing, customs and practices. A very enjoyable read. Well done. less
