review 1: Glasgow in the 1950s - and how well the scene is set, even though every car reference passes me by. Lennox is a corkscrew* of a man, though straightening himself out gradually, despite the twists of these parallel investigations, the analogies and asides are minor jewels and I shall long remember Twinkletoes' description of his ideal woman.I've another one to read but shall savour it for a bit. * slightly over-used to express crookedness
review 2: The setting, the city I was born in, Glasgow, written by someone who lives in the area that I live in, Fife, and a genre I'm using for general research how could I resist. Yet, the story didn't work for me. I did warm to the story a little as it moved along but aspects of the writng jarred with me throughout. The na
... moreming of characters such as 'Small Change' MacFarlane', (I know names like these do exist),I found clichéd and irritating. The humour throughout the book, much of which consisted of observations of Glasgow and its citizens was similarly hackneyed. Lennox,PI, treads the path between Glasgow's finest and the gangland world controlled by the three kings. Like most private investigator's Lennox has flawed personality in this case a Canadian scarred by the war who finds himself stuck in the 1950's Glasgow. There is a grittiness about Lennox, I imagined him almost Taggart like, on one hand, he is the the war hardened, life schooled, investigator while on the other there is a softer side with a conscience and value set which directs much of what he does. The story is basically two investigations that unsurprisingly are interwoven in ways that do keep the reader engaged. The story plot works relatively well and has enough twists and turns to move it along. While not for me, I think that there are many crime readers who would enjoy it. less
