review 1: This book suffers from the same problem that I had with the Telling Room, the author strays from his topic too often. When the author is discussing the historical Inquisitions, this book is well researched and well written. Too often though the author makes, often strained, comparisons to the modern world and tries to show a commonality of oppression. This serves to take away from the historical subject. You never get a compelling overall view of the Inquisition. Instead, each part sits as an island of its own.
review 2: An entertaining book that ultimately turned out to be a disappointment. The inquisition is probably the most fascinating institution in human history, yet this short book is mainly focused on trying to find similarities between contemporary ins
... moretitutions in a pretty moralist tone. Yes, I do think such similarities exist. No, I do not think Murphy does a good job in tracing the reproduction of the institutional practices into other institutions. The book did arouse my interest though. less
