review 1: Nelly May lives with her 12 younger siblings in a small little house. Her parents don't have enough money to feed all of the children, so Nelly May sets out to find a job to help her parents. She arrives at Lord Pinkwinkle's house and asks for a job as a cook and housekeeper. She was awarded the job, under some conditions. Lord Pinkwinkle demanded Nelly May use his own language when referring to things around his house. After reviewing the new vocabulary, Nelly May is overwhelmed. After she had enough, she quit Lord Pinkwinkle. After realizing how good Nelly May was, Lord Pinkwinkle offered Nelly May her job back. The pictures were beautiful! It was a cute book to read to children. Definitely have to have a sense of humor to understand it. Would definitely use this in my c... morelassroom.
review 2: Based on an old folktale that I've never heard before, this story is about how Nelly May gets a job as a housemaid for an eccentric Lord who has his own words for things. Nelly May practices the new words till she has them down, and then is able to use them in a moment of crisis, even as she is simultaneously realizing that it is not worth it. You could use this book to talk about synonyms as well as the relationship between employer and employee. less
