Overburdened by his parents’ bickering and a bully’s attacks, fifteen-year-old Lucky Linderman begins dreaming of being with his grandfather, who went missing during the Vietnam War, but during a visit to Arizona, his aunt and uncle and their beautiful neighbor, Ginny, help him find a new perspective.
I thought that this book was going to be one of those books where I couldn’t stop crying and wanting to hug the main character and tell them that it would be alright. That did not happen. I did still enjoy the story and I would recommend it to everyone, it just did not go the way is was expecting it to go.
I enjoyed hearing from the perspective of the bullied boy (although I still would like to hear from the POV of a bully). I also liked the realism aspect of the bullying (kid with a lot of influence bullies other kids, parents are to scared to go against people with influence so the stand by and let it happen). I also enjoyed hearing about Ginny and how she dealt with her life. I was pretty upset to hear about what some of these characters went through, but that is the way of life, and people need to see that and stick up for these people. I enjoyed the idea that no one is perfect and that the side characters are not who they seem to be. You were always wondering when the next secret would be uncovered. I also loved how worried Jodi was Lucky (actually I didn’t love it, it really bugged me). But all of the characters were awesome and… you guessed it, real.
The plot was depressing. Lucky had to face so much and no one did anything to stop it. But then we moved to Arizona and it was suddenly less depressing. I liked the story much better in Arizona because I wasn’t crying every 5 pages. That’s right, folks. If you read this book you will be crying every 5 pages until we go to Arizona. Then you will be crying at irregular intervals. The setting was not that detailed this time, except in the dreams, which was okay because we did not spend time looking or even paying attention to the setting. There was two much going on to spend time with the setting. I am just rambling now, so I will just stop talking.
