review 1: Cynthia Hand is one of my favorite YA authors. The Unearthly books are poignant, beautiful, and heartbreaking.... and this book is no exception. Hand is so gifted when it comes to describing loss and the grief that follows. I FELT EVERYTHING IN THIS BOOK. Yes, some of the characters fell a bit flat for me, but it's forgivable because the sole focus was on Lex and her struggle to find herself, her family, and establish her solid ground again. I will read anything this woman writes!
review 2: This is a book about grief. Lex's brother commits suicide and she's left behind with her distant father, her shell of a mother, and an ex-boyfriend and friends it's just too difficult to be around. Cynthia Hand includes an end note that she also lost her brother to suicide... more and it completely makes sense because you can feel the emotion and sadness and pain through the pages and the compelling writing. While it could have been easy to get bogged down in the despair, Hand truly makes Lex shine. Yes, she is a little broken, but she also finds ways to put the pieces back together in a way that is inspiring and admirable. The supporting characters are well-written and likeable and the conclusion is solid and authentic. A great realistic recommendation for anyone dealing with loss and anyone who could just benefit from feeling uplifted. less
