review 1: I love Cynthia Lord's novels. She does an amazing job of dealing with issues that kids really face in a completely realistic way. Her characters always seem like real people with complex emotions and motivations. In this one, Lucy is dealing with trying to get her mostly absent father to notice her talents while making new friends after a move. Nate and his family are dealing with his grandmother's dementia. The New Hampshire lake with its family of loons feels real. A great read, especially for summer.
review 2: "Half a chance is better than none." This came up quite a few times throughout the book and made me think a lot, especially as I feel we (I?) often miss out on wonderful opportunities to enjoy a very special moment, the now and here, because we a... morere pre-occupied with worries and plans about the future. The story touched me deeply as the grandma suffers form dementia - it reminded me that as the affected family members we tend to forget that we are not the ones who are suffering the most... How hard must it be of the person suffering from this terrible disease, knowing you have to say good-bye to people you love, places you have enjoyed... less
