review 1: Great book! It provides a clear and entertaining account of the historical development of Rap music from its beginnings in the 70s through its triumph as a mainstream art form. Of particular interest is the description of the rise of the African American Entrepreneur as a major force first within rap, but then also in the ever increasing circle of consumer products that came out of the art form.
review 2: Excellent, exhaustively researched history of hip hop culture, mainly focusing on the business aspects. Best book about hip hop I've read. The first half of the book was more interesting to me, as hip hop gets bigger and more corporate, the artists and their stories are less interesting. That's my personal bias, however, as I am not a fan of today's rap m
... moreoguls like Jay Z and 50 Cent. Beyond that, the stories of the pioneers of hip hop and their battles are amazing. Highly recommended, a non hip hop fan would enjoy this book, its just that well written and enjoyable. less
