review 1: Without question, Dan Jones knows history and this book displays his mastery of the subject. I never new what the true origin of "Anglo-Saxon" and the connection during the Middle Ages of England and France. I also saw the role of castles in a totally different light.Unfortunately, I only made it halfway through before giving up and do what I rarely do, put the book on the shelf, half finished. It's not the author's fault but keeping track of all the Richards, Henrys, Philips and Edwards who were sons, fathers, brothers, uncles and, yes, husbands was just too overwhelming. Adding to the name confusion was trying to keep the chronology straight. While it would have been interesting to learn more about the battles and wars, they appear to have been such a fact of life th... moreen that there were just too many to assimilate.Perhaps covering 200 years of Anglo-Saxon history is too much to cover in a comprehensive yet interesting way in even 500 pages.
review 2: If the bible is the primary source of all stories with all inclusive themes; greed, sex, power-reach, etc., than this book must come in number two. It gives an outstanding presentation of the Plantagenet line and their impact on the map of Europe and the development and definition of the England as state and culture.Of course in covering the lineage, and lives, from Henry I to Henry IV, all activities relative to the wars and rebellions, family feuds, nepoticide and excommunications are covered. Yet for this reader, I found much interest in royal taxation and misuse of authority as causality of a noble class revolt and the progressive development of Parliament as an institution with related authority over the crown.A bit pro-Plantagenet in prospective when addressing the aggression against the Scottish and Welsh states, but none the less a good read on the kingship of Plantagenet’s, their lives, relationship with the French Crown, Papal involvements, European re-mapping and the cornerstones of the English culture. Highly recommended. less
