review 1: I read this while doing some research on the topic of bullying. There is a bit of a cynical side of me that says, "Teenagers can be so impatient. Does this really help them, to be told that it gets better -later,- that they have to make it through high school?" So much activism is focused on making life better for adults, such as repealing DADT and passing marriage equality laws.On the other hand, there is certainly no harm to be done with this book. It's like Chicken Soup for the Soul, only there are nothing but uplifting stories in it. (Plus, there are no Chicken Soup for the Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transsexual/Queer Soul books.) Every person in the book has something positive to say, something that shows that for them, it got better. They may have been so low, so ho... morepeless, as to attempt suicide, but they didn't succeed, and they are so happy for it. And if it helps keep even one teen going, then this book is worthwhile.
review 2: This was a quick read, and I skimmed over some of the contributions. I think this is a really great book for anyone questioning his or her identity in any way and for all young adults in general who feel alienated or alone or like no one understands them. I often wish I could reach back into the past and tell myself the same things the authors in this book do. It gets better, none of this matters, be who you are, and don't give a shit what other people think. It would have served me well and I would have been a lot happier. There are a lot of typos in this book, which is annoying, and it did get repetitive after a while. I guess that is by design; there is a great diversity in the walks of life the authors come from, and I am not the target audience. Hopefully people who are at a stage in their life where they need reassurance will read this and latch onto at least one of the messages, connect in some way, and take solace in feeling less alone."Be patient and tough; someday this pain will be useful to you." -Ovid less
