review 1: The Crooked Maid is set in Vienna post World War II. As it opens, a woman and a young man are on a train to Vienna. Anna is on her way to meet her estranged husband who was interred in a Russian prison camp, Robert is heading home after several years in a boarding school. The two passengers share some conversation until they reach their destination, then part not knowing how their paths will continue to intersect or how their anticipated homecomings will go awry. This is an absorbing, character driven novel with an intricate storyline. I wasn't keen on the ending, but that in no way diminished my enjoyment of Dan Vyleta's powerful writing.
review 2: Such as a confusing story!!!! I'm not sure I could even explain to somewhat what it was all about. Many tim
... morees I had to read two or three pages into the chapter before I even knew which character I was reading about. Characters were totally unbelievable! Story was unbelievable...I think??? The only reason I gave it two stars is because the actual writing was actually quite good....just the story wasn't. Hoping to find some meaning I stuck it out to the end, but feel now that it was a total waste of time reading this book. less

Interesting, not what I expected. Takes place after the war and is very dark in places. Good read.
