review 1: I gave up on this at page 125, and I only got that far with a bit of skimming. It was perhaps too dark for my taste. Darkness, of course, has a place in literature but in order to stomach it I need to feel as though I am learning something, and that was not the case here. Oh, and one of the characters is given a monkey to live with, which then defecates all over her flat. Defecation in literature is one of my pet hates, so no doubt this did not help warm me to the book.
review 2: A brilliant read - difficult to categorise though. Set in the immediate aftermath of WW2, in the dreadful bitter winter in Berlin, it starkly portrays the reality of life and the compromises of survival. But the story transcends the usual spy storyline, and becomes truly a love story,
... morefocused around the enigmatic Pavel. The prose is crystal clear and sharp - with a real feeling of being in Berlin at that time. A stunningly accomplished novel. less

Great book written by a great guy. I could totally hear Dan's voice when I was reading ;)

Story had so much potential but I felt it fizzled out a bit - not the worst read!

A very dark novel about a dark time. Probably wouldn't recommend it.

Engaging, yet ultimately unfulfilling. The ending was unsatisfying.
