review 1: Blood-Drenched Beard is an eerily intense and for me, almost indecipherable and difficult to review book. In the words of the unnamed protagonist, all I really can say is “Wittgenstein.” (A teaser. If you read the book, you’ll know what I mean.) Yes, our character doesn’t have a name (at least one that we know) and the face he has is his grandfather’s. He has a rare disease where he cannot recognize faces, not even his own, but learns to compensate by memorizing other identifying characteristics of a person’s identity. At the beginning of the story, when our leading character’s father returns home and before he commits suicide, he tells his son about his grandfather, giving him a photo he can use to compare to his own face in the mirror, cautions him not to g... moreo in search of the truth surrounding his grandfather’s death, and leaves with a request to dispatch his lame dog and companion, Beta, once the suicide is complete. “Dogs relinquish a part of their instinct forever in order to live with humans, and they can never fully recover it.” Another hint: When the father tells his son to read “The South” by Jorge Luis Borges, follow his advice and read “The South.”Our protagonist pays his father no heed and along with Beta, travels to Garopaba to search for the truth about his grandfather’s death. A myth contains some truth; an idol is a lie or falsification. Is Grandfather myth or idol? We see our main character through a couple of interesting, if not interchangeable relationships, and then follow him on a final, arduous quest for answers surrounding the mystery around his grandfather. In the end, Grandfather and Grandson’s stories appear to merge.I was immersed in this story and intrigued, but I think I missed over half of it. It cries out for discussion.
