review 1: Kinda of a melodramatic title for this extremely well-written book, which is more or less a mini-biography of Allan Pinkerton. Pinkerton is a very interesting historical character and the highlight of his career is considered to be the weeks he spent detecting and foiling a plot hatched in Baltimore to assassinate President-elect Lincoln. This book is the perfect length, provides interesting tidbits like a description of the world's first female private detective (Kate Warne) and informative descriptions the operation of railroads in the mid-19th century. Well worth reading when you're feeling like a mini-dose of history written in a compelling manner.
review 2: This book has won several awards in the Mystery non-fiction category. It is a good read. However, as
... more an historian, I am leery of historical books that do not provide sources for their "Facts." While the book does have a bibliography, it does not prove source notes. I know many of Pinkerton's early records were destroyed in a fire. Still, the question remains, did a plot in Baltimore exist or did Pinkerton explot the tensions in the city to gain him fame? less

A great book. But Alan Pinkerton should be featured in the title since he's the star of the show!

Good read. Found it interesting as this is out of my "ordinary"reading.
