review 1: I am not usually a big fan of short stories, but this collection is excellent. As is the case with all truly effective short story collections, the stories in this book speak to each other and create an imaginative universe that engages us as we move from one story to the next. So many short stories by other authors leave me with the question "so what?" and then leave me altogether, but these stories are staying with me. I had the opportunity to read one of these stories aloud with a group of teen mothers, and they loved the story, which captured the experiences of young, vulnerable teenagers in a way that was so honest.
review 2: This is a collection of short stories. I didn't realize that at first so I was disoriented when I started the second chapter and all
... more of the characters were different, but then I realized it says "stories" on the front cover, whoops! Unsurprisingly, I liked some of the stories better than others. Snakes and Robert E. Lee Is Dead were my favorites. Jellyfish was my least favorite because I felt like it didn't end so much as stop, but maybe I just didn't "get" that one. All eight stories were well written, evocative, interesting and illuminating. They let you taste the flavor of someone else's life for a little bit, which is sometimes unsettling but always worth doing. I thought the author showed an especially good knack for writing in the first person perspective of different ages of female narrators, from ages nine to about thirty. Two of the stories are about men (one third person, one first) and Jellyfish is in third person, but the other five are first-person-female. less
