review 1: Darcy Lockman decided to move from journalism to psychology at the same time her husband had decided a similar course. He was assigned an internship at a nicer hospital, she chose Kings County Medical in Brooklyn. I found the author provided a clear direct narrative of her year at Kings County and her 4 rotations there. The psych ward was under review for poor care and is the hospital where the video of the woman falling over and dying in the waiting room was taken which shocked the country. While not quite a snake pit, the hospital's building G is where the poor residents of Brooklyn go for psychiatric care. They expected to be stabilized in two weeks then sent home or moved on to state facilities. Darcy discusses patients especially in the forensic unit where pati... moreents have been accused of crimes in a sadxl way. The more severely ill will be caught up in the legal system where more trauma and little help awaits. I felt her rotation in consults for patients in other sections of the hospital was the most interesting of her rotations. Darcy also highlights how little psychology is respected in medicine. One psychiatrist intern tells her she is the one to get a patient to take his/her meds. Talk therapy is disregarded and not thought of as important. Good book.
review 2: This author was so honest about her experience as her year interning at the poorly run Kings County Hospital on the outskirts of Brooklyn, that at times I cringed for her. I read this book quickly, as it was easy to devour her stories fast in order to find out what would happen next. Anyone who is interested in finding their own career in psychotherapy or how what you see on tv (police and hospital shows) actually plays out in the real world will appreciate this book. less
