review 1: When you were younger were you scared of something? Maybe it was finding a closet monster or one under your bed or maybe just even being scared of the dark and your parents somehow found a way to comfort you. Chico the Brave by Dave Horowitz takes place in Peru and talks about a little chick that had so many fears of the world. As you can see, the main character is Chico and the other characters in the book are chickens and llamas. In the beginning of the story you see the narrator talking about Chico and how he had so many fears in the world to the point he was even scared of his own shadow. You find little Chico so scared to go anywhere so then his dad comes in and tries to loosen him up by telling him a story. His dad tells a story about how way in the mountains there... mores a “superbird” that gets people when they are in trouble. After hearing this Chico thought to himself, “what makes the Golden Chicken so brave?” with this thought he put himself on an adventure to find the Golden Chicken to ask himself. I personally thought this book was really good. The colors and the message behind the book is very encouraging, even to me. Chico the Brave images were very bright and that didn’t match with the word “afraid”, that showed me that the author was trying to show to the readers that we don’t have to be afraid of anything. Another reason why I liked the color was because it makes the student feel comfortable reading the book even though Chico was scared and the illustration didn’t portray that. This would be a good book to share to students because it shows that even though we are afraid of something that it shouldn’t stop us from exploring the world. Maybe if you step out of your comfort zone you might find something unexpected, like Chico didn’t know he could be the Golden Chicken that his dad was talking about. Everyone can relate to Chico, like it might be that we are scared about the first day of school, monsters, or the dark. Chico can definitely be a rolemodel for students by showing us no matter how big or small the worry may be, we all can overcome them by taking a huge leap of faith like Chico.
review 2: Chico is a young chick who lives in the mountains of Peru. He is afraid of EVERYTHING. Things like his shadow or hatching from his egg frightened him. In order to not be so scared, Chico’s father told him the story of the Golden Chicken who is a “superbird” who is brave and saves the day when there is trouble. Even with the thought of a “superbird” around to save him, Chico is still scared of everything around him. So he goes on a quest to find the Golden Chicken. He meets up with a gang of llamas who send him on a wild goose chase. But as the wind blows Chico through the air, it turns out that he saves the day and finds his bravery. I love how Chico finds his courage. I also love how even though the bravery came by accident he was able to keep it and to save the day. This is a great bit of storytelling. With bright, humorous illustrations that will keep readers interested in where true courage is found. less

Awesome story about overcoming fear - and becoming bravest of all! Perfect plot for the age group.

A book set in Peru demands more culturally authentic and appealing illustrations.
