Informational: Students see pirates and how their names start with different letters of the alphabet. Ending: This book ends with students seeing all 26 pirates on the ship and how they are in alphabetical order. TEACH: This book is great for teaching students the letters of the alphabet and reviewing their sounds. Read the book and emphasize the letters/sounds. Review letters prior and at the end have students read the letters as a class. review 2: I read this to my two boys and it wasn't a hit. I like the way eric carle and dr.suess incorporate the alphabet and counting into a storyline but there was no storyline here. It was a little repetitive so they lost interest. Also the pirate (boy)/ princess (girl) thing greatly annoys me. So the underlying theme is that boys are rebellious and have fun while girls like pretty things and being taken care of? I don't think these ideas need anymore reinforcement in our culture. I hate to write a bad review of a children's book but I really don't see the need for gender separation with these books. less
