The Playdate 4 (Pages 181 – 266)

SPOILERS!!!

The book is proving to be unexpectedly surprising. At the beginning we are led to believe that Debs is the woman to be beware of. She is not all there, that is true, but she is not as deranged as we think. Suzy and Callie have secrets, big secrets.

When Callie, Tom, and Rae return from hospital, they find Debs there, cleaning and running the flat. The woman had intended to leave a doll for Rae to replace the one she had lost in the accident. Yet, when the plumber gave the keys and she saw the messy state the place was, she couldn’t help herself. This doesn’t sit well with Callie, who asks her to go home.

Callie later breaks down before Tom, saying how hard looking after Rae alone is, and he doesn’t say much. Then when Rae is sleeping, she lets him out from the back, and then straightaway there is a knock, and when she opens the door, a man is there and they make love. We are led to believe that the man is Tom, but I was suspicious when she doesn’t mention the man’s name, but only says he’s her child’s father. Then the next day when Tom comes, he says that he wants to talk about last night, and Callie tries to act all ignorant, and when Tom says that he was in the car for a while and saw what had happened. This means that it wasn’t Tom who had sex with Callie. So I am starting to suspect that Callie and Jez are having an affair, and that is the reason why Callie keeps thinking about a secret she keeps from Suzy and why she tries to pull away from her. So if Jez is the man from last night, what does she mean that he is her child’s father? Isn’t Rae Tom’s daughter? I am confused here.

Suzy also has secrets. The first one is the woman who she has hired to investigate Jez, who she thinks is having an affair with someone at work. Poor woman doesn’t know that the lover is closer to home. Debs also suspects that Suzy is the person who is harassing him. When she was cleaning Callie’s flat, she saw her using the phone and heard her own phone ringing next door. Does that mean that she is the one making the phone calls? Why? When Debs confronts her about it, Suzy claims that she only called to talk to her about Rae and the accident. I am not sure who to believe.

Debs talks to her sister Alison about what is happening and her feelings, and Alison makes her write a list about what to do. One of the things is to sort out things with Callie and what happened to Rae. So she starts remembering, and then she realises that there is something strange that happened yesterday. So she writes an apology note to Callie and insists that Suzy never told him to hold Rae’s hand. The second thing that she mentions in the note is what she remembers from the previous day. Before the accident, Rae asked her if she should pretend not to like after-school club just like Aunt Suzy had told her to do. Silly Callie doesn’t believe Debs, but I think she is being honest. For some reason Suzy has wanted to jeopardise Callie’s new job because I imagine she wants Callie for herself. Maybe that is what her son has copied from her. When Suzy goes to the school, the teacher tells her that Henry has hit another boy, and she also mentions that Henry has an unhealthy relationship with Rae as he doesn’t want any other children to play with Rae. Suzy doesn’t react well to this and threatens to talk to the head as she feels her son is being neglected.

We know that Suzy has issues from her past. Her memories brings us back to her childhood when she was sent to live with a couple when her mother was in the last stages of her pregnancy. Suzy calls the woman who she lived with for some months a monster as she ill-treated her constantly. I can imagine this has influenced the way she is now, and that is why she is acting this way with Callie. I found it strange when Callie talked about the other mothers avoiding her and stopping their children from inviting Rae for playdates, so now I am wondering if Suzy is to blame for this. Maybe she made some false comments about Callie to the other mothers, thus making them reluctant to befriend Callie.

None of these three women are likeable. The three of them are either twisted, mean, or deranged. I am curious to see how the book will end.
