review 1: I found this a thoroughly enjoyable reading experience. What began as a very simple narrative about what appeared to be a totally unremarkable time, town, set of characters, and uncomplicated relationships turns into something quite different. I started enjoying the book as an easy read, yet the author was able to entice me to another page, another chapter. Oddly, one of the main characters and plot/theme carriers was not human, rather the parrot. As the story unfolded, I thought I had figured out quickly what was to come, and, indeed, I had. (I suspect the author intended to have the reader make easy assumptions only to give surprises that could not be anticipated.) All that being said, when I finished the book, I was left with more than a "nickel for the trouble." ... moreInstead, I was left questioning more sophisticated ideas and doing more than asking for a "penny for my thoughts."
review 2: woah.mind bend.what the heck did just read?1950s small town.douglas the doctor and Dare his assistant are the main characters.oh ya. and Hannah. the bird.the plot was effortless and smooth.I enjoyed this so much except for the fact that I think I have to reread this because I'm pretty sure I missed a piece of this puzzle. its a genre in its own. something I didn't think was for me... but was for me.if a book makes you think like this its a winner... less
