review 1: Purple prose and bad grammar/taste. Sentences with both: "Lovestruck, a handsome young man with nice teeth had been put to trial and then to death and then interred somewhere forgotten" (26). "Her mother pursed her lips, blew and the hot tongues danced and were gone" (32). "Cherry and cinnamon exhalations and the coming evening quilted quiet stars over the courthouse as the custody hearing went longer than expected" (41).
review 2: As a child growing up in the hollows of West Virginia, on the banks of the Big Sandy River only a rickety bridge-length from the shores of Kentucky, the Gothic tension, the almost unbearable darkness of "Ancient Oceans of Central Kentucky" resonates, gains a sort of Appalachian existential credence. The writing is just so deliciously
... more "right" (mentally flailing right now--great writing often dumbfounding me, leaving me like an aphasic philistine in its wake.) Hours after completing this amazing book my heart still feels the restless flap and caw of dark birds. less
