review 1: This was a really good story and a compelling one too since it is actually about the author's mother ... and her lover. I don't know if I enjoyed it exactly since, to me, it felt a little "dry" -- like reading a long article almost. I can't put my finger on what I would have changed but I feel like it could have been better. As someone interested in family history it could just be the lack of details on his fact hunt but I also feel like there were a lot of facts but not enough emotion for a story about lovers I guess. It was a really short read though so I'd recommend giving it a try if it interests you at all.
review 2: This small vignette is author David Dobbs attempt to recreate his mother's mysterious past. When his mother passed away, Dobbs found out tha... moret his strong, indomitable mother, who was a respected physician, had had a love affair with a married man during WWII -- a man who she claimed was the true love of her life. Dobbs set out to find out all that he could about this man who died in the Pacific theater and held his mother's heart all those years.It reads like an interesting magazine article. Kindle published it as a "single" and I think it was worth the price. Dobbs is careful in his analysis of his mother's questionable behavior...perhaps too careful. His caution, which I'm fairly certain was to remain respectful of individuals still involved, took away from the sweeping emotion the two lovers must have felt. It becomes reduced to an almost clinical analysis. But for those who can read between the lines, one can imagine the emotions involved.If you have a Kindle, it's a $3 download and I think it worth it for the most part. less
