Good things come in threes: The Help review

Please be aware that this review contains some spoilers. Do not continue reading unless you are fine with being spoiled.

The Help has been on my TBR for ages, and I even avoided the movie at all costs so that I could read the book first.

This is a really beautiful story, and the narration in the audiobook was perfect. There were three narrators, including Octavia Spencer, who played Minny Jackson in the movie. My only qualm with the narration was that the woman who voiced Skeeter spoke so bloody slowly I needed to listen at nearly double-time to stop myself getting distracted or zoned out.

I also found Kathryn Stockett’s author note at the end of the book to be moving and poignant. For those who haven’t read it, the note revealed that she had been in a situation similar to Skeeter’s, and wrote The Help because she couldn’t help wondering what life might have been like from her maid’s point of view. This revelation brought everything together for me, and provided a nice sense of closure.
