review 1: Wow. One of my favorite books this year. Easily. I was a bit sluggish starting it, but it wasn't the writings fault. It's always weird stepping into a new world. What made it easier in this book is that one of the main characters is from Earth (sky! i like this game) and is thrown into this weird place just like you. You both learn about it as you go. Writers go into the outer reaches of space and find that little dark corner and shine the light into it to imagine what could be there. Sometimes they borrow from predecessors who came before them, but it's the really clever ones who do it so well you can't always tell where they borrowed from for ideas. This is what David Edison does and does it really well. I will definitely be looking for more of his stuff in the future or... more on my next world/life whichever comes first.
review 2: A pretty impressive 1st novel by David Edison, I hope he writes more stories from the universe he has created. The beginning of the book is pretty gross, more like a horror novel than scifi. For instance- Blood Sluts- prostitutes that get paid to allow their john to kill them, because they cannot die- they are body-bound and will come back alive with money stuffed in their mouth. Pretty frickin offensive. But it creates the atmosphere of this city with no name, where people go to die but because of the 'svarning' cannot die the true Death anymore. The characters in the story grew on me, their world crew more complex, and the ending was pretty awesome. less
