review 1: This meta-, borderline farcical, frequently laugh-out-loud funny play also seriously examines the concept of race-- how people use it themselves, how it is used by others, and how, in the end, it may be more of an artificial construct than we think. My only minorcriticism of this play is DHH's soliloquy at the end, which bluntly re-summarizes the themes which have been so beautifully and subtly developed before.
review 2: a play actually with David himself as the protagonist, talking about the fluidity of race and situation of asian americans in the 1990s ( which is alian to me though). it starts with David protesting against cameron Makintosh ( a name so renowned to me as the greatest producer) casting a white man as the chief asian pimp in his musical Miss S... moreaigon as Cameron stated there were no capable asian actors for this role. Ironically when david chose Marcus as the lead for his play Face Value, he mistook Marcus , a 100% white guy with a touch of ssian characteristics, for an asian and introduced him to the asian community, who played his role untill the end of the play.this is a typical David play dealing with identities and social status of the minority in a white-dominant country, and the boundary between fiction and fact is so blurred with hilarious dialgues that Daivd, as requested by marcus , sent Marcus to china for an happy ending by listening to some ancient songs sung by dong people, a chinese minority.an ingenious endeaver to deal with social problems, though it lacks the cathartic depth of M.Butterfly. less
