review 1: Very informative and well written...Those who are heartless and ignorant enough to visit Sea World should definitely read this...But so should everyone else. A bit slow in the beginning, but speeds up and becomes a challenge to set down. Watching "Blackfish" works as a great "prologue" (due to overlapping "characters" and events) to this book, but is no substitution. Also, always have a highliter on hand while reading...This book contains a wealth of information you'll want to share with your friends and family.P.S....When you simmer down a bit (after reading this book), watch "The Cove"
review 2: Wow. I read this book after watching the documentary Blackfish and feeling like I wanted to learn more about killer whales in captivity. This book certainly did
... morethat! David Kirby covered pretty much every detail there is regarding the subject. While the book is definitely against keeping orcas in captivity, there were efforts on Kirby's part to show both sides, and he went so far as to compliment some of what SeaWorld does. I, however, am appalled at the behavior of what used to be my favorite park in Disney World, SeaWorld. I'm ashamed that I ever purchased a ticket to see these magnificent animals jailed in a bathtub. These creatures are certainly too large and too intelligent to be caged for the amusement of humans. I will never again step foot in SeaWorld, and I've added "orca watching in their natural habitat" to my bucket list. I gave this book four stars because it is a bit long and took a few chapters to really get going, and also because it lacks a section on what people like me can do to help the efforts of those against orcas in captivity. For now, I will just do whatever I can to convince people to read this book, watch Blackfish, and never, ever visit SeaWorld again. less

Reads like a thriller while also shedding light on the captivity industry and conservation.

A very disturbing view of what goes on in regards to killer whales being held in captivity.
