review 1: I've enjoyed many of David Marr's essays over the years but this was the first time that I've been left feeling sad and furious. I would have given this 5 stars if I didn't have such an overwhelming sense of indignation towards 'Big George'. Perhaps it's deserving of 5 stars because it can arouse such a sense. Either way, I recommend this essay to anyone who cares about protecting the small and helpless from the big and pious.
review 2: Once again, David Marr gives us a detailed picture of a person in public life. And as I have mentioned previously, Marr does tend to write emotively, in a way that you know from the first few pages that he is not impressed with his topic. Marr does well to describe George Pell the man, his background and influences and his role
... morein the Catholic Church both locally and globally - specifically his role in the abuse scandals that have come to light. Marr also does well to recognise Pell's many foes within the Australian Catholic Church and how many are not impressed (to say the least) with this man representing the faith. Also included in this QE, is the correspondence to Anna Goldworthy's "Unfinished Business", which also makes for interesting reading. The responses included encompass a variety of responses which again highlight one of the points made by Goldsworthy in her essay, that feminism is not a "one size fits all" approach and that individuals have their own beliefs, desires and needs regarding equality and that perhaps the cause would do better to recognise this rather than internal debating and accusations over 'who is right'. less

An excellent and chilling summary of the career of Cardinal Pell. Not for the faint-hearted!

A swinging attack on the moral lassitude of one of our key 'spiritual leaders'. Devastating.
