review 1: The more I think about this book, the more I like it. It wasn't a quick read by any stretch of the imagination (at over 600 pages, I guess that's to be expected), but I'm so glad I stuck with it. It's written in a such a way that for the first few hundred pages you really don't know what the focus is. Not because it lacks focus really, but because it focuses in on the subject slowly and from multiple angles (sorry if that makes no sense ...). At around 70% (I was reading on Kindle) the pace really picked up for me, going from enjoyable but maybe ponderous to edge of my seat. By the end I was regretting it being over and am missing the character already. I will, without a doubt, be reading more of David Mitchell's work. I shouldn't have waited this long to s... moretart!
review 2: This book started out 5 star, but then took a rapid turn to the metaphysical and it was disastrous... for me. I am not a fantasy genera fan and this seemed, at the time, a good chance to build up an immunity for future endeavors. I should not have invested the time here, because it suddenly turned from great novel to full blown fantasy, quickly. All be it written well I thought it was a genera blender not a box of pigeon holes. David Mitchell is an amazing writer and I would rate the first half of this novel higher than 5 stars even with my strict rating adherence, but the plot was not genera blending it was just ridiculous. less

Started OK but just got so SLOW and such long completely irrelevant bits.
