review 1: The story of cyclist Frank Lenz, who disappeared in Turkey during an around-the-world cycling trip. It also recounts the efforts of fellow cyclist, William Sachtleben, to find out what happened and bring Lenz's murderers to justice. Interesting to learn more about the early days of cycling. The around-the-world trips of both Sachtleben and Lenz were recounted stop by stop, which got to be skim-worthy at times. Unlike some missing persons stories, there is a general consensus about what happened to Lenz, with quite a bit of testimony and evidence supporting it. I didn't envy Sachtleben's mission to discover what he could of the truth.
review 2: I should have liked this book more than I did - as it's about a subject of interest (both cycling and travel) but I did
... more not find it of great interest. The attention to detail felt as if the author was struggling to make this story book length, and didn't really succeed. Frank Lenz was a young, passionate cyclist when he set out to ride around the world in 1892. Unfortunately, he followed in the steps (wheels?) of three previous cyclists who not only completed their rides - but also lived to tell the tale. While we follow Lenz's development as a cyclist, and his trip, we then also follow the story of exploring the circumstances of his death. less
