review 1: Abraham Lincoln was a hard working principled genius. And a pragmatist. This book covers 1862. The Civil War is on. President Lincoln is having difficulty piercing through the BS thrown up by his generals. However, by the end of the year he becomes, as a result of intense study, a competent military strategist and Commander and Chief. Lincoln is a master politician and organizer. He is constantly faced with the challenge of balancing extreme positions and uses every tool at his disposal to maintain the Union. His inner strength was amazing. This book is inspiring and well worth the time. Also, the reader should reader Lincoln's 2nd Inaugural Address.
review 2: An engaging book about one of the most vulnerable years in the history of the United States. V
... moreon Drehle paints a detailed picture of Lincoln as a brilliant but burdened man placed in an incredibly challenging and complex political scenario. I was very intrigued by Von Drehle's insight into Lincoln's struggles with the immorality of slavery versus the preservation of a country whose economy had been in many ways fueled by this abhorrent institution. The permeation of slavery into every facet of the politics of the United States (separate from those of the confederacy) is a concept with which I was mostly unfamiliar and kept me thirsting for details. Additionally, Von Drehle does a good job of recounting the major battles that happened during this year, and how the successes and failures of the Union army played into Lincoln's strategy for issuing the Emancipation Proclamation. less
