review 1: When I first grabbed this book off of the shelf at my local library and looked over what it was about I was immediately intrigued and I somehow overlooked the fact that the book was narrated by Mal's brother instead of Mal himself. So when I got home and began reading I was immediately disappointed. I wanted to read about Mal. I wanted to know his thoughts. I wanted to know deep down why he decided to just one day lie in bed and let himself expand into the fattest man in the world. I continued to be disappointed until about half way into the book. Then it started to pique my interest. This book isn't really about obesity or Mal at all. It's about Mal's brother and how he and his family were affected by what Mal had done. It's about life and love, not just romantic love but... more familial love as well. I ended up enjoying this book more than I thought I would but I still think that it would have been interesting to see Mal's P.O.V. All in all it was a great read that definitely made me think.
review 2: On his 25th birthday Malcom Ede returns to his childhood bed and refuses to get out. While his mother eagerly feeds and bathes him, and even buys a clock that counts the days, his brother, who narrates the story, isn't so eager or excited about his brother's decisions. This non-linear story tells the particular dysfunctions of this family examining life, love and family in a relatable way. Only slightly did it tug on my heartstrings. less

Very disappointing, the end seemed quite predictable. I don't recommend it.

Funny, but sad story of growing up in a supposedly dysfunctional family.

Started terribly. Improved towards the end. Written badly. Good twist.
