review 1: An enjoyable book.Mal is 25 years old when he decides to stay in bed where he slowly grows morbidly obese. 20 years later he weighs 100 stones. The story is narrated by Mal’s brother who is in love with Mal’s girlfriend. The entire family is eccentric. Mal’s mother dotes on him and serves him ever increasing amounts of food. His father becomes a recluse living and working in the attic.Mal does not want to grow up and join the rest of the modern world in working, paying, sleeping and having children; he wants to do something with his life. So is staying in bed for 20 years doing something? For Mal, it served his purpose
review 2: I didnt find this book pleasant to read and by the end I was struggling to find the point of it. The idea and plot had so muc
... moreh possibility but I feel certain points were only touched on and could have been explored much more. The narrator character was very likeable and you couldn't help but feel sympathy. The use of flashback with suggestions of events that would shape the eventual outcome was enough to keep me reading but my annoyance with Malcolm and his mother as characters made it a bit difficult. Despite this, I'd like to read more from Whitehouse as I think he possibly has a lot to say. less

Sad. (And I'm probably missing the point somewhere)

Kind of depressing, but good.
