review 1: I listened to the audio book version of this, which may have been a mistake. The narrator attempts to use accents for every sentence coming from the characters mouths; meaning not only Leitzel but every one in her family comes off sounding like Zsa Zsa Gabor while all the Codonas seem to be voiced by Charo. Too bad an astute editor didn't nip that habit in the bud before she filled ten or eleven CDs with her bad acting. I may go back and read it at some point as the wealth of circus history definitely interests me but I can't really recommend the audio version.
review 2: I know circuses have come under a lot of scrutiny for animal mistreatment etc etc....but I grew up thinking the circus was completely magical. I saw the Barnum & Bailey Ringling Brothers circu
... mores a couple of times growing up, and i was ALWAYS in awe. Those people seemed like something from another land....and with that said, when I heard there was biography written about 2 of the most famous circus performers of all time...from the true golden age of the circus..I was all in. It really is a completely tragic story from start to finish (and I'm a sucker for a tragic love story), but these people are completely fascinating. That this isn't fiction baffles me...it all just seems so fantastical...much like the circus itself. This is just a really fun piece of non-fiction. less
