review 1: I think I liked this so much because it recalled to mind some of the fantasies I loved as a child. Despite the obvious horror and depravity, and perverted sexual overtones, there was also a feeling of innocence and child-like magic. A feeling that it didn't really matter exactly how the benevolent 'magic' worked, it only had to be meaningful to the hero. And at the end of the day that's how real magic works doesn't it? if we believe in something enough, even if it makes no sense to others, often it can be fulfilled.I loved the naïve fantasy of living in a department store. No, it's not a new idea, but it's always been a delightfully escapist fantasy. And there is a discernable mystique to a department store at night, after everyone has gone home. Similarly, the impression... more of grand home with endless rooms and secret passages, and a magical house within a house is a familiar, but still delightfully ingenuous image. I really enjoyed meeting Crispin and Amity Onawa, and wished I could have spent more time with them. I'm not sure yet whether I will go on to read '77 Shadow Street', but rather suspect that if I do I still would not be meeting Crispin and Amity again. I finished 'Moonlit Mind' with the impression their story had been told, and they were moving on to quite different, and probably interesting adventures of their own, but not ones we necessarily need to share with them.Like so many of Koontz's stories, there is horror, perversion, corruption.... but there is also hope.
review 2: This is my kind of Koontz! It's been years since I've read anything by Koontz but when I saw this novella, I thought I'd give it a try. It was a very quick read but it was great! Unfortunately, it has whet my appetite to read 77 Shadow Street which is not on my agenda right now. As many of my friends know, I am not one to stick to series or sequels because I'm usually disappointed. Since this was a very good read and can stand by itself, I'll stop here. 77 Shadow Street will be one of the many that I will put on the back burner for a while. less
