review 1: A most interesting book. The author gives us a lot of background information on the lives of Teddy Roosevelt and Booker T. Washington. Then she goes on to tell us about the first time a president of the United States invites a black man to have dinner with him and his family in the White House. The ensuing furor was damaging to the careers of both men. And it was still a cause celebre years later.
review 2: This is one of my favorite newer Roosevelt books I have in my collection. What a great story and even though the actual event was only moments, Davis gives us a grand view of the two men and the culture of the day.
