review 1: I picked this book up from the library when I was looking for something else. Then, it took me a couple weeks and an overdue notice to get me to crack it open. Then, I read it in two days! As a single woman who eats most of my meals alone, it was fascinating to have glimpses into others' choices when they're faced with the "what's for dinner" question when they're the only ones to answer! It was kind of like people-watching through a book. The recipes included at the end of each chapter were highlighted in red in the text, to draw out the origin-stories. Plus they were almost all portioned for one or two people, which I appreciated.
review 2: This is the kind of book that would be enjoyable to find in a summer cottage you are renting for a week. Nothing deep,
... more but it is enjoyable considering how different people approach a meal alone. I ordered it by title and was expecting some brilliant approach to food in single portions. Instead it was based on a hobby Patrick (her husband) devised on the many foodie trips he had been on with her. "What do you eat when you eat alone?" It reads as a combination of sociology, memoir more in the line of MFK Fischer, but sillier. I enjoyed it and have picked it up and read excerpts since. less

There were only a few recipes of the 100 that I'm interested in but the stories were interesting.

What an odd, charming little book. Super gender essentialist, but pretty adorable.

Meh. It's ok but it's also possible that food writing isn't my bag.
