review 2: TLC CALL #: YA DRIZA DChris’s Rating: 3.5 StarsMila suffers from a bad case of amnesia after the death of her father in a fire. Having just moved to a small town with her mother she doesn’t really feel connected to anyone, until Hunter, a newcomer from California shows up; but then she learns a shocking truth—her life is a lie. She isn’t the teenage girl everyone thinks she is. She is an android created by a secret organization in the US government to infiltrate and destroy her owner’s enemies…and her “mom” stole her to save her from something or someone. Worse yet, they have been discovered and are on the run. Mila simply wants to live a normal life; but if she is to survive and maybe save those she loves, she must accept both the android and the human side of herself and muster every ounce of courage and skill she possesses. How to start the actual review part…I have mixed feelings about this book. The first 85 pages…and just about everything to do with Hunter (Mila’s infatuation for a boy she knows squat about) I didn’t really care for. In fact, if I didn’t suspect what was coming I would have put the book down. While I loved the struggle Mila faced in wanting to be human and live her life, initially there didn’t seem to be any real role-models that would have suggested humanity was worth the effort (besides her mother and possibly Hunter who, to be fair seemed nice…but we still know squat about him). Her friends were superficial and obnoxious to the point I would have felt she would have been happy to be rid of them. Once the story picked up…around page 90 or so, the story got really good. Mila’s voice seems genuine, her struggles real and her ingenuity adds to the book. I expected a few twists that never materialized, but liked the conclusion (besides the last few pages which were kind of meh…dang you Hunter). Better for a female than male audience, who might enjoy the blind teenage emotions which added up to my greatest objections. Overall it is worth the read, especially if you can get past the first 85 pages. less
