review 1: I can understand why some people didn't care for the main character, Jaswinder, in this fun novel I recieved through First Reads because she can be whiny, self-centered, and wimpy, but, if you can get past that, the story is fun and it is a quick read. The other characters, like Halmoni, Jac and, of course, the Guardian Angel, are enjoyable. In fact, the romantic in me would have liked to see more of Jac :). My favorite part of this book was that I learned some Hawaiian words (and how to pronounce the state fish's name).
review 2: I've been to Hawaii enough to appreciate the local flavor the author adds, especially the joke in the company name, Haole Wood, and the trials of the very white heroine who sticks out as a mainlander despite her Asian Hawaiian fat... moreher and grandmother. This quirky book is a little confused on whether it wants to be a romance or a cozy mystery when it grows up, but don't let that stop you from reading it. less
