review 1: It was a well written book, a good translation form French. The story is about a big and vibrant family that looks like a happy one, while in reality the truth about it is far from what you see. Under the surface of normality, there are sexual abuses, neglect, emotional manipulation and lack of real support. The childhood is a vulnerable time and the damage done results in many years of suffering and trauma. It is a tale of generations, parents and children and the past that the family does not want to acknowledge even in the face of its disintegration.
review 2: This book made quite an impression on me. Delphine investigates and tells the story about the life of her mother, her family and own upbringing. I thought it was daring how she doesn't sugarcoat thing
... mores, but really tells the family story with all its ups and downs. The descriptions (for instance about how mentally ill people behave on medications) are spot on. She also reveals her own feelings, but they don't get in the way of the storyline. All in all a very touching and well written book. less
