review 1: This author brought her A-game. The characters were complex, as was the plot with lots of twists I never saw coming. And I am usually pretty good at predicting where a story is going. I remember stopping close to the end and having to reread a couple of paragraphs, thinking, "Wait, what just happened? No!!! Really? Wow!" And then reading it one more time just to make sure.I finished this two months ago and I still remember it pretty vividly. I liked how unpredictable the story was. Just when I thought I knew what might come in the next chapter, nope! Something different. This author marches to the beat of her own drum, and I kept turning the pages, trying to sing along. I loved it.If you're on the fence about this one, give it a shot. You won't be disappoi... morented.
review 2: I'm giving this 4 stars because it was a great story. Here's my reasons why:1. Point of View (POV) - I don't have a problem with multiple POV but there was a whole lot of confusion when POV changed. The transitions are not well done in most cases, unless the transition was between a male and female. The author does transition at the start of a chapter most of the time but it is the voice that doesn't transition properly. There was one chapter, and I didn't note it, where it went from Raven to the Mexican female character. I was lost for several pages until I realized there was a problem. I had to go back, reread a few pages from the previous chapter and start the next one over before I finally figured out there was a change in POV. In multiple POV you have to be very clear up front when POV shifts. That wasn't done well at all.2. Pacing - initially the story drags ... a lot. I stuck with it and it did pick up. So if you're put off by this kind of thing, don't start. Once the pace picked up, it moved at a good clip. Things happened quickly and then I got really hooked on the story.3. I saw some reviews about profanity. I don't like profanity in what I read but as I recall there might have been three swear words in the whole book. It is possible I missed one. If you don't like the words used to describe bovine excrement then don't read this. I think they use it twice. Other swear words just weren't used. If you're able to move on and ignore what you consider swear words you'll enjoy the story. It is a good read and far cleaner than your average book seller's romance novels. There are far worse words on prime time television and in those popular movies everyone is going to see, and in far more abundance.4. There was some slight stereotyping but who cares. The scenes with the illegal aliens were a bit off and yes, stereotyped. But those scenes are few and near the end. However, if I wanted politically correct fiction, I'd be reading the current administrations campaign promises. The author can fix these in a rewrite if she wants.5. There was a couple of places where there were info-dumps. One is during the questioning of the Mexican woman. Writers generally know this is taboo but it happens. I'm not saying the information wasn't necessary. I'm saying the manner it was given was not written well. (Ms. Anderson, you might want to review anything involving the Mexican's. Those appear to be the wonkiest scenes in your novel. They just didn't ring true in a couple of places. But you may be as in the dark on illegal alien behavior as most of the country.)6. Bravo for Ms. Anderson's ability to write a clean novel without vulgar descriptions with nudity, extreme profanity, dismemberment, rape, sodomy, excessive violence, and brutality. There's NO SEX scenes, really not a one and you won't miss it at all. Unless that is what you like. Heaven forbid someone gets upset when bovine excrement used twice in its less dignified form but craves ten pages of porn.7. I quite liked all the characters. Someone said the characters weren't well developed. For me, Raven was clearly defined as were other important characters. There are several funny interactions among several characters. less
