review 1: I didn't realize this was the second book featuring the MacGruders. I should have done my homework better. And I have the first one hidden in my room somewhere! Humph. Though I didn't realize it until after I read it, so I guess they don't need to be read in order. Anyhow....I loved this book. This is the first I've read by Cosby, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Duncan had been betrayed by Isabel in the past, but had never gotten over it. Isabel had her reasons - good reasons! - but she could not tell Duncan. But Duncan was able to put it aside to honor a pledge to Isabel's dying brother. No really big surprises here, but I thought it was very well written, and the chemistry between the characters was fantastic. I was really pulled into the story and didn't want it to end, he... morence my rating.
review 2: Picked this up because it was at the local (UK) library and I recognized the author's name.I couldn't finish it because it uses the lack-of-communication plot device to keep the hero and heroine apart. Duncan was in love with and engaged to Isabel. She left him a week before their wedding to supposedly become the mistress of an earl. He hates her because of this, but promises her brother to save her when she's thrown into the dungeon for aiding William Wallace (who is forever Mel Gibson in my mind). The thing is, Isabela agreed to stay with the earl to save her father. Now, I have serious issues with the father and brother allowing this to happen. Yeah, they protested, but they still let it happen.Isabela wasn't allowed to tell Duncan the reason why she became the earl's 'mistress' because the earl hates Duncan and wants to hurt him. However, we quickly find out that Isabela never did sleep with the earl. To me, this is unbelieable. The earl would have slept with her to punish Duncan. There's absolutely no reason for him not to so I have a major problem with the mistress who wasn't really a mistress thing. But I digress. Isabel is thrown into the dungeon. Duncan comes to save her. Isabel should now be able to tell Duncan the truth since, obviously, the situation has changed. But she doesn't!!! I wanted to bash her head in for keeping silent and not admitting she wasn't the earl's mistress.Still, I tried to overlook these very big issues and read on. Duncan rescues Isabel. He tries to get her to leave the castle, but she has to get a Bible that has evidence in it that can clear her father's name. She won't leave. Duncan won't let her go after the Bible alone. It's OBVIOUSLY risky for him to be running about the castle. He ends up getting stabs and THEN, Isabel thinks "Why hadn't he told her about his injury and its severity when he returned to the chapel? However much she needed to find the Bible, she wouldn't have remained at the risk of his life." Uh, what? His life was at risk before the injury and only now, you're concerned for his safety? That's when I stopped reading. I can overlook a few problems, but this was way, way too many. less

No complaints. No real highs either. It wasnʻt a bad book, just not terribly exciting either.
