review 1: I really loved this book - the worldbuilding is really great and it has very well developed characters. I smell a future love triangle but still, it was really good. This world includes witches (different types), oracles, Shadowblades and Sunspears (a type of immortal warriors in the service of witches), angels (complete with swords of fire), mysterious creatures, shapeshifting Fae and so on. It's a fresh interpretation of classical paranormal creatures and what I liked most was that most of the characters are well developed. Oh, and the heroine is a badass warrior with a reckless streak - what's not to love? There is the premise of a romantic relationship (just a couple of kisses so far) and the author does a good job at building the tension. All in all, I really liked it an... mored I am starting the next installment right away. If the next one is as good as this one, this series might go on my favourites shelf.
review 2: The witch-bitch Giselle has made Max as her personal Shadowblade, a superhuman who only has one duty for eternity: serving her. For thirty years she has been serving Giselle and the rest of the coven from outside threats, so grudgingly that she always thinks of some ways of killing Giselle and be free. But there are several problems with that. First, Giselle is a powerful witch capable of killing her so very easily. Second, there’s a powerful binding spell that prevents Max from doing so. Third, although Giselle betrayed their friendship by luring her to the life that she never asked for, Max -although bitterly refuses to admit,- actually cared for her, and vice versa. Fourth, -an even bigger issue- there’s a major war that will come. The powerful beings known as The Guardians that are more prominent than even witches started a campaign that will put humanity to an end, and bringing magic to blossom the earth again. The rebellious Max needs to kill her urge to get a revenge on Giselle by truly cooperating with her, to save the world.Bitter Night is a bitter story of Max, who despite really having a major problem being a witch’s guard dog, serves an important role to the Great War that will come. She has to be matured before she even save somebody’s life, however. Her ego, stubbornness and recklessness are the traits that dominantly present in this entire book. But despite her weaknesses, she really is a professional Shadowblade proven by the way she handles herself during a fight. The irony is that she can’t really handle intimate relationship, although it somehow changed when she met Alexander, another Shadowblade of a rival witch.I feel..satisfied (a weird choice of word) when I read this book. The bond between Max and Giselle is simply unique. It is the mixture of love, affection, friendship, revenge, hate, but also loyalty. I need to say that I care more about this bond than about a cliché story of how humanity is at the edge of extinction by magical threat. less
