review 1: Lulu is a young employee of the CIA, assigned to her lover in Marrakech, to keep an eye on the household, and his friends many of whom are from various middle eastern countries. Nothing is what it seems, and the novel rather frustratingly takes it time getting to the climactic scenes of the book. It's leisurely pace did seem realistic, however, and I liked this book, about a naive protagonist whose eyes are opened to the subleties and ironies of life and politics. The pace may be too slow for some.
review 2: Excellent. I was intrigued by the way the private and public kept intersecting. The narrator frequently complained that her romantic feelings interfered with her ability to concentrate on her work and that the solution might be simply to not have any priva
... morete life at all or to get married and simply enjoy the sensual side of life. The narrator was a somewhat bumbling low achiever, who seemed to have limited self-awareness but tried to do the right thing without knowing what that was exactly. Satirical treatment of overlapping antiterrorist networks none of which knew what they were doing. The sense of paranoia and foreboding brought on by constant uncertainty about what game each character was playing made this a great read. less
