review 1: This book has been on mental to-read list for years, and I'm glad I finally got around to reading it and getting to "meet" Bulu, who is a totally adorable little dog who became a sort of foster parent to orphaned animals in Africa (including warthogs, monkeys, and even an elephant). Readers will enjoy seeing how he took care of his little brood and will be tense during the moments of danger that Bulu is in as he protects his family. This is a sweet book about a sweet dog.
review 2: Bulu: African Wonder Dogby Dick HoustonBiographical Nonfiction336 pagesBulu is an amazing dog that might have saved the lives of many orphaned animals. He was bought at a crocodile farm by Anna and Steve Tolan to replace their old dog that had to be left behind at their old home in E
... morengland. Taking place in Africa, Bulu could easily have been taken early on because of the many predatory animals in the region. However, even after he was attacked by lions and cobras, he survived to take care of more orphaned animals. Steve and Anna came from England to retire from their police jobs to the African bush. They decided to make a convention center for the children of Zambia to learn about conservation efforts. While building the center, they happen upon three abandoned baby warthogs; they manage to capture two of them and save them. Here Bulu turns out to be a great foster parent and becomes a father to the warthogs. Later they are told to take care of two vervet monkeys, a baboon, a bushbuck, two baby elephants, and several others, all who have been abandoned or have been orphaned. Each one of them became deeply attached to Bulu, who seems to have a way with orphaned animals. With his help, all the animals regain their confidence and people are able to rehabilitate them into the wild. After almost nine years, Bulu dies of liver failure due to berenil (poison or cure if taken in small dosages) taken for the sleeping sickness. This book deeply affected me emotionally because of what Bulu was and what he did. I have always heard of amazing stories of dogs in my life, but not one as powerful as Bulu. He has done the impossible by simply surviving the multiple attacks from African animals, and that has earned my respect. When he was attacked by a lion and still drugged, a puppy was taken into the hospital and at the slightest sound of distress from the puppy, Bulu shot up and tried to go to it. He also then helps orphans in astounding ways. Even the most afraid and traumatized of the animals reached out to Bulu when they were with him for only a few hours. He now became a great figure in that specific animal’s life that probably would have died without him. Another thing about Bulu is his unfailing loyalty. Before he was taken by a lion, he confronted one to protect Anna. When Steve was being hunted by a crocodile, Bulu refused to leave his side. This book is one that will stay with you a long time, and is one of my favorite books on a dog that I have ever read. less
