review 1: A man is rescued in Tireste during the second world war by a Finnish doctor. The man is wearing an outfit with a name, Sampo stitched into it, which the doctor identifies as Finnish. The patient has no memory and cannot communicate, but based on the name Sampo, the doctor decides that the man is indeed Finnish, and helps him return to Finland. But is the man really a Finn? An examination of the meaning of language in a person's identity.
review 2: I liked the idea behind this book - a man wakes up after being injured in Trieste during WWII with no memory of who is in. His doctor believes he is Finnish and he sends him back there to help him regain his memory.The bits about Finland in WWII were interesting as was the reminder how complex Europe is and the vario... moreus relationships between countries and communities. But I was not grabbed by how the story was told. less
