review 1: I absolutely adored this book, which I randomly found in the children's section while hunting for books for my son. I love cephalopods, so to find a picture book with such amazing illustrations was amazing and makes me want to start of list of octopus picture books. The story is about Octopus who lives in a cave off of a beautiful reef filled with many colorful fish and invertebrates. Despite her surroundings and some animated seahorses who want to play with her, Octopus is shy and wants to spend some time by herself. So she leaves the reef and goes on an adventure to find a nice quiet place nearby, only to find it so noiseless that she suddenly misses her home and goes back to it. A great book for children studying the ocean, the end pages feature all the names and illust... morerations of the fish contained inside the book. Highly recommended for ages 2-7, 5 stars.
review 2: I always love this author's stylized, yet naturalistically accurate drawings, and this book is especially wonderful, with its depiction of sea life. It never fails to remind me of snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef! It always charms my 2 year old too; she especially loves the little seahorses. The story is simple, yet charming, about how we may feel shy around others at first, but that it's worthwhile to summon our courage to connect with them. It also teaches lessons about the animals of the reef with its accurate depiction of their niches within the ecosystem. less
